Whatever happened to Miranda from SATC?
I have been trying to watch “And just like that” and other than learning some actors should not be producers in some instances, I also am wondering why some of the writers, producers screw over a character you liked from the beginning…
I am using Miranda as my example because when I first started watching Sex and the City, she was one of the female role models on the show I could relate to the most. She was independent, worked hard, and lived life on her terms. As, I have read in other articles online she was worried about getting her own apartment, running a marathon, making partner at her firm, men were more of a want not a need for her. I do admit she was oh so bitchy and confusing when dating/sleeping with skipper but I am calling him a wash as he was a weird combination of clingy and nice. However, regardless of the men she date who were nice, mean, weird, she always seemed to know who she was and what she did and did not want out of life.
One example that comes to mind is from season one or two and she is on date with a guy she bonded with it a the grocery store of the hatred of designer croutons. She discovers on her first date that the man she has just started seeing is separated not divorce. I am not even going to go into the limbo that is being separated while married. But Miranda decides when she picks up his phone mid a really bad comedy show set that she wants to separate from him. Their is also the episode where she starts dating a guy who is way too bossy but is awesome if bed, and she ends up being the optimist as much as I like her misanthropic realistic approach to men. But through this and various instances in sex and the city she shows she is her own person.
My issue with her lately is the sub par role she and other actors receive in And Just Like that.. Miranda from episode one of this sequel post covid just seems well lost and not herself, am not even touching on the other characters because that is a diatribe that can be saved for another day..Things between her and steve seem lukewarm at best and her either quiting or retiring from her job for a human rights degree that frankly is hard to tell if she is even working on after she meets che, and her blissful ignorance about address race, etc. other woke issues seems well lost on her, when this is miranda, last I checked she would do research and figure this stuff out before delving into this new world that has been around for a bit..
They could have done more with her character should could have started her own non profit that helps illegal immigration, human rights, etc. Or if money was the issue should could have moved to a more progressive law firm where she did work she cared about and did pro bono work helping the little guy when she could since based off what I have seen with her character being a corporate lawyer was eating away at her even if the pay and benefits were decent. At least this way her work life would have felt like it had some purpose or meaning.
Her romantic life feels like a shit show to be honest, first leaving her husband for a fling, not going to couples counseling or trying to regain their sex life with a sex therapist if needed or exploring ethical non monogamy, swinging, etc.. these were options that could have been explored. She could have told her husband that she might be attracted to men and women or that she doesn’t understand her own sexuality anymore.
I would have taken these options above rather than ditching him for che, which as much as I love Sara Ramirez I don’t like a 40 year old acting like they are some broke college student in their twenties with a quarter life crisis, drinking smoking and taking all their issues out on Miranda who is trying to be supportive in the first place. This changes half way through season 2 to have her and che breaking up and her planing to divorce Steve who even with his sleeping with the whole foods girl still seems to love Miranda for some reason. I am not sure if I am alone in having their feelings about Miranda has changed since this new show, that I don’t even want to claim is as cannon after what they have done to screw over Miranda and other characters in this show. If you have any similar thoughts about Miranda or just want to rant about And Just Like That, I would love to hear about it in your comments below.
